I’m in Halifax until August 29th, visiting my family and high school buds. After I got in on Sunday, I went for a walk around the Dingle (yeah, you can laugh) with my mom and my brother, Jared. Considering it’s rained every day in Montreal this month, I’ve been trying to stay off my laptop whenever I’m not working and enjoy the unexpected weather in Halifax (sunny, breezy, lovely).

Oh man. I’ve been missing Pears soap since I left the English-dominated provinces of Canada for Quebec 4 years ago. This morning I went to the drug store and picked up a modest 5 bars to bring back home. I’m not sure what it is about this particular soap, but it’s incredibly pleasing. The clear amber colour, the woody “clean” smell…mmmmm
While we’re talking cleansers, I love this post about making your own natural cleaning products. I’ve often experimented with making bath stuff. My favourite super-easy face scrub is sugar mixed with honey. Rub it on with a bit of warm water and wow!
I’ve also had a few diy failures. Once I poured a mix of peppermint flakes, olive oil, and lemon juice on my boyfriend-at-the-time’s hair in an attempt to clean a head wound. He screamed while the acid burned his fresh cut and the flaky oil dripped down his face and body. He still was finding peppermint flakes on his skin a week after the incident.
There is a scene in my recent past where I was interupted while sitting on the couch with a towel on my head soaking my feet in a milky oil bath. When asked what in God’s name I was doing, I shouted back, “Shut it, I’m fucking Cleopatra!”

Lots of transition happening in my family right now. My mom just retired from her medical practice as a family doctor (she won’t let us call it a retirement though, she’s “moving on” to teaching and writing, so it’s not actually a break anyway). And my younger brother just got home from an intensely rehabilitative year away in New Jersey.

Change.

From TeenFlare.com,

Meet Tessa Smith

Whatcha wearin’? A vintage hat, jacket and shoes, with layered tees from American Apparel and a reconstructed skirt from Preloved made out of a rainjacket.
What do you do? Tessa is a website editor and a writer for Indyish.com. She is also 1/3 of the band Brave Radar and the lady behind the label Fixture Records.
Where are you? In one of the closets of the great vintage store Local 23 (located at 23 Bernard St. in Montreal).

Tiny thing: My shirts are actually not from american apparel. I got one at the first clothing swap me and Marilis organized at woodenapples, and the other is from a friend. My tights and skirt were also free (hurrah for working in retail). This whole outfit cost: $20, including the iced coffee from Club Social.

Ugh, don’t bother putting a personal note in your friend request if it’s obvious that you cut and paste the note into every request. I do like the option to include a note though, and I usually write something if I’m requesting a band I like. But I guess a lot of bands use friend adds as marketing?
Ok, I’ll add your band to my friends, but seriously, what does that do for you or me? I think the successful add has some sense of “I like what you’re doing, I’d like to add you to my friend list.” Isn’t that how we make friends?
Saying, “Hi please listen to my music and comment” just seems socially awkward.

If you’re willing to follow along, this is a really interesting lecture by Dr. Albert A. Bartlett on how the exponential function can explain the world energy crisis. Seriously. Really really good.
