Soooooooo I alluded to my haircut in previous posts, but following in the “photos or it didn’t happen” school of internet logic, I finally present to you the photographic evidence for your perusal. Here’s the story of my haircut (short version: free haircut in exchange for portfolio photos for 3 friends who cut hair, do makeup, and style fashion shoots). The whole thing took 2 days; we filmed the second day and made a time lapse, which you can watch over here.

You can tell we warmed up by the second day. On the first day, we did 4 looks and there were a LOT of outtakes. On the second day, we did 7 looks (not all of them are shown) and I felt like I was getting a tiny bit better at posing for the camera. My favourite photo is from the last look with the spiky hair.

Makeover Team:

Tiffany Elton cut and styled my hair. Originally from Newfoundland, Tiffany works with me at my parttime job, cuts hair out of her apartment, designs vintage-inspired clothing for her line LadyLike, does fashion illustration, and plays music. Here’s her take on the haircut project. More about Tiffany.

Liz Furlong did my makeup. She works on movies and events doing makeup with a focus on environmentally-friendly products. She recently started a holistic wedding and event planning collective called Bouquet with 5 other women whose skills cover catering and hospitality, custom tailoring, graphic design, event planning, photography, and of course, makeup. More about Liz.

Marilis Cardinal styled the clothes and took photos. Marilis tumbles here and has a streetstyle and party photo website called Pregnant Goldfish. She works for Nightlife Magazine, does freelance styling for fashion shoots, takes photos of bands and events, and a whole lot more.

All of these ladies are inspiring, multi-talented entrepreneurs and it was a lot of fun to work with them on this shoot!

That’s pretty much it. My hair’s short now. I’ll stop talking about it soon.

“My grandmother had a sewing room and made her own clothing. She has a very lady like style and a lot of vintage patterns and fabrics, I loved to hang out in her sewing room.

I was a vintage fiend out of necessity as a teen when you could get a garbage bag full of clothes for a few dollars. I always drew outfits I wished I had and day dreamed about what I wanted. I always drew and wrote poetry and escaped into music and my own world. Later my parents did the “go to university or else” tactic. I chose hair school because it was the most creative career I could get educated in and still remain in my home town. I used to doodle designs in my hair chair waiting for customers.

Some roommates were in Montreal for the summer and came back raving it was the place for me and convinced me and brought me the forms to apply for fashion school. I did. I moved all by my lonesome. I didn’t even know how to take the metro! I went to fashion school did design, did the industry stints, went back and did courses in fashion marketing and sales representation and started partaking in grant programs to start building my business and developing the necessary skill sets, to take command of my life and path. I also worked for the fabulous Nicole Picard of Fairyesque as a design/production assistant and learned a lot through her and her team. She is still my mentor and I am still picking her brain.”
